What we learned about the Harlem Renaissance

On Tuesday, March 8th, our students created a beautiful mural to reflect their learning of the Harlem Renaissance. Working together with artists from Precita Eyes, students brainstormed and then painted images that represented overcoming racial struggle. Students chose to integrate different symbols related to Harlem Renaissance artists and their messages. From jazz singers Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday to writers like Langston Hughes, the mural captures some of the powerful narratives of African Americans. Students connected past racial struggle to the ongoing fight for racial justice today, realizing the need to empower them selves like their artists of study. The mural showcases students’ talent and teamwork, representing the family body that is Ida B. Wells.

Think 8:45!

If you’re rushing to school to make it by 9 o’clock you’re probably arriving after the morning bell. Try this. Plan to be at school no later than 8:45. That way, if Muni runs a little late--which it probably will--you’ll still be able to get here on time. To earn credits and get your education, you have to be here on time -- that's 8:45!

The Three A's -- Attendance, Attitude, and Achievement

We would like to share our time tested recipe for success -- the Ida B. Three A’s.  Students who get to school on time and focus on academic success while keeping a positive attitude really do succeed at Ida B. Wells. And our only success is when the students succeed! Please keep the lines of communication open with teachers and administration. Let us know how we can support you more effectively!

When Arriving Late To A Class

Do your best to NEVER be late for class. It can be hard on you, hard on the class and hard on the teacher. But if you are tardy, here are a few pointers to help you stay on the friendlier side of your teachers: (1) Come in quietly; (2) If there’s a tardy log, sign in; (3) Pick up any materials available by the door and/or the tardy log; (4) Without talking to anyone, focus on the lesson and try to plug yourself in to what’s going on; and (5) Wait for your teacher to find the best time to check in with you. Thanks for all that you do to help make Ida B. the special place it is!
